Hrad Fryštát

Fryštát Castle is a remarkable Gothic-Renaissance structure whose origins date back to the late 13th century. It was initially built to guard and control the important Silesian trade route connecting Hungary with the Baltic states. From the mid-15th century onwards, the castle became one of the key residential seats of the powerful Silesian ruling dynasty of the Piasts, and later also served the Teschen-Fryštát branch of this noble family. Today it stands as the only monument of its kind in the Czech Republic.

Perched on a rocky hillside above the Mlýnka stream, close to the banks of the Olše River, the castle occupies a striking position on the very edge of Karviná's historic town centre. Until the mid-20th century, the entire complex formed a single unified estate, but it was subsequently divided into two independently developing parts — the ducal château and the parish church.

Historically, Fryštát Castle was held as a fief of the Bohemian kings from 1327 to 1573, making it one of the longest-serving residences associated with the Czech royal dynasty. The Piast family continued to reside here until the line died out in 1571, marking the end of this celebrated medieval dynasty at this site.
