Gemerský hrad

Gemerský hrad ranks among the oldest medieval castles on the territory of present-day Slovakia. It stood in the Rimava Basin, north of Tornaľa, on a hill overlooking the village of Gemer from which it takes its name. Its origins date back to the 12th century, and after the devastating Mongol invasion of 1241 it underwent extensive reconstruction.

The castle served as a county seat and played a central role in the feudal administration of the Gemer region. Although King Béla IV granted it to private owners, by the end of the 14th century it had reverted to royal control and once again functioned as the seat of the county. During the turbulent dynastic conflicts in the Kingdom of Hungary in the mid-15th century, forces loyal to Jan Jiskra of Brandýs seized the stronghold, underscoring its strategic importance.

The castle's fate was sealed by King Matthias Corvinus, who ordered its demolition in 1458 after capturing it. Today virtually nothing remains of the former fortress — only barely recognisable foundations hidden beneath dense vegetation hint at the prominent role it once played.
