About

Hviezdicový hrádok near Dolné Janíky is a well-preserved 17th-century anti-Ottoman fortress recognised by its distinctive star-shaped hexagonal rampart and listed as a national cultural monument of Slovakia.

Hviezdicový hrádok – also referred to as Hviezdny hrádok, Pahorok, or Turecký val (in Hungarian: Csillagvár) – stands near the Little Danube, roughly two kilometres from Dolné Janíky, a settlement belonging to the municipality of Janíky. The site preserves the remains of a 17th-century anti-Ottoman fortress that formed part of a broader defensive network erected against advancing Turkish forces.

The castle's name derives from its most striking feature: an earthen rampart whose ground plan forms an irregular six-pointed star measuring approximately 102 by 112 metres. A palisade wall once crowned the rampart, and the entire complex was encircled by a water-filled moat. A further protective fence and an additional ditch are thought to have surrounded the outer perimeter. The main entrance was situated on the north-eastern side, facing the Little Danube.

Thirteen wooden structures occupied the interior, serving as living quarters and an armoury for the garrison. The 17th-century dating is supported by archaeological finds including coins, ceramics, clay pipes, and nails. The remains of the fortress together with the moat have been listed as a national cultural monument of the Slovak Republic since 27 June 1966.
