About

The Častkovce manor is a late Renaissance building with a 15th-century core that once served as a fortified curia guarding a trade route and later formed part of the estates of the Báthory and Nádasdy noble families.

The manor house in Častkovce is a remarkable example of late Renaissance architecture in Slovakia. It was built in the first half of the 17th century, though its oldest core dates back to the 15th century – scholars estimate it originated around 1420. In the second half of the 18th century, the building underwent substantial reconstruction in the late Baroque style. It stands on the southern edge of the village, beside the medieval road connecting Čachtice with Vrbové.

During the anti-Ottoman wars, the manor served as a fortified curia protecting an important trade route. Its strategic significance grew considerably after 1541, when Ottoman forces captured Buda and Esztergom, bringing the threat of invasion directly to Slovak territory. Throughout the remainder of the 16th century and into the 17th, the Váh River region suffered frequent raids and plundering.

At that time, Častkovce and its manor belonged to the estate of Čachtice Castle, then held by the Báthory family. When Elizabeth Báthory married Francis Nádasdy – a prominent Hungarian nobleman and supreme commander of Hungarian forces against the Ottomans – ownership of the manor passed to the Nádasdy family. Francis Nádasdy made frequent use of it, and tradition holds that a network of underground passages once linked it to Čachtice Castle, some four kilometres away.
