About
The Renaissance Radvanskovci Manor House in Banská Bystrica's Radvaň district, dating from the 16th century, is undergoing phased restoration under the stewardship of the Academy of Arts, with plans to transform it into a vibrant cultural venue.
The Radvanskovci Manor House is one of Slovakia's notable Renaissance structures, built in the first half of the 16th century on older Gothic foundations in the Radvaň district, now part of the city of Banská Bystrica. The two-storey, single-wing building features four towers, an enclosed courtyard, and loggias on both sides. Its interiors combine Renaissance vaulting with flat ceilings added in the 19th century, and the manor underwent several reconstructions during the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries — the Empire-style southern wing dating from the last of these periods. It was officially listed as a national cultural monument in June 1963.
After an extended period of vacancy, during which the Slovak Monuments Board described its condition as dilapidated, the city of Banská Bystrica found a new purpose for the building. In 2013, the city approved a long-term lease to the Academy of Arts for the symbolic rent of one euro per year. The university committed to investing 1.65 million euros in the restoration, partly funded through Norwegian grants, and in December 2014 a further one-million-euro government subsidy was announced.
Renovation work began on 15 April 2016, with the first phase addressing the most urgent needs while the Academy of Arts continues to seek funding for subsequent stages. The institution's vision is to open the manor to the general public through exhibitions, concerts, and cultural events. Plans also include the possible establishment of a museum dedicated to puppeteer Anton Anderle, a native of Radvaň.
