About
The surviving walls, bastions, and the iconic Red Tower are all that remain of Litomyšl's once-extensive medieval town fortifications, now protected as a cultural monument.
The town fortifications of Litomyšl stand as a listed cultural monument, offering a rare glimpse into the medieval past of this historic Bohemian town. Although only fragments of the original defensive system have survived to the present day, they remain a powerful reminder of the town's importance in the Middle Ages.
The preserved remains consist of sections of the original walls and several bastions, which once belonged to both the Lower and Upper Town. The most prominent and best-preserved element is the Red Tower, which served as a key component of the Upper Town's defences and continues to attract visitors today.
Exploring these remnants provides a wonderful opportunity to imagine life behind the fortified walls of a medieval settlement. The fortifications complement the many other historical attractions that make Litomyšl one of the most rewarding destinations in the Czech Republic.
