About

Neštich is an archaeological site in the Small Carpathians featuring well-preserved ramparts from the Hallstatt and Great Moravian periods, protected as part of the Svätojurské Hradisko nature reserve.

Neštich is a remarkable archaeological site perched on a forested hill above the district of Svätý Jur in the Small Carpathians, within the Pezinok region. The hill rises at the confluence of two streams and conceals traces of human settlement dating back to the Hallstatt period. The site later served an equally important role during the era of Great Moravia.

The original fortifications have survived in impressive form: the earthen ramparts run for a total length of 1,600 metres, enclosing an area of more than three hectares. Standing between 8 and 13 metres tall, they testify to the strategic importance of this location as a large defensive stronghold. Particularly noteworthy is the ancient water-supply system, constructed from pipes made of fired clay.

Today the site forms part of the protected area known as Svätojurské Hradisko, administered by the Small Carpathians State Nature Conservancy and covering nearly 20 hectares. Visitors can reach Neštich from the town of Svätý Jur by following the blue-marked hiking trail; at the Hradisko junction, the route continues to the right along an unmarked path, or alternatively via the red-marked trail.
