About
Starý hrad is a medieval castle ruin on the right bank of the Váh river east of Žilina, designated a National Cultural Monument of Slovakia in 2017.
Starý hrad, also known as Starhrad or Varínsky hrad, rises on the right bank of the Váh river at an elevation of 475 metres above sea level, to the east of Žilina. These impressive ruins tower over the Domašín meander and sit in close proximity to Strečno Castle, though on the opposite side of the river. Historical sources record the site under various names, including Warna, Varna, and Owar.
Owing to its historical significance and remarkable setting, Starý hrad was inscribed on the list of National Cultural Monuments of the Slovak Republic in 2017.
