About
Tekov Castle in Starý Tekov, first recorded in 1075, served as the seat of Tekov County until 1321 and was destroyed during the 14th century.
Tekov Castle, known in Latin sources as castrum Borsiensis, was an earthwork fortification situated in the village of Starý Tekov. The hill on which it stood, called Várheď, was inhabited long before the castle itself was built. Archaeological finds from the site date back to the Neolithic period, revealing that this elevated location attracted human settlement from very early times.
The first written record of the castle dates to 1075, making it one of the oldest documented fortifications in the region. Throughout the Middle Ages it served a key administrative role as the seat of the Hungarian Tekov County, a function it fulfilled until 1321. The castle was subsequently destroyed during the fourteenth century, bringing its history to a close.
