About
Tisovec Castle, first documented in 1336, was deliberately destroyed by imperial forces at the end of the 17th century and today only sparse ruins survive on Hradová hill.
On the hill known as Hradová, above the town of Tisovec, two medieval fortifications once stood side by side, collectively referred to today as Tisovec Castle or Tisovecký hrad. The earliest written record of the stronghold dates to 1336, and over the following centuries the castle passed through the hands of numerous owners.
During the turbulent fifteenth century, the forces of the Bohemian condottiere Jan Jiskra of Brandýs seized the castle, but King Matthias Corvinus later reclaimed it for the Hungarian Crown. Further hardship came in the sixteenth century, when Tisovec and the surrounding town fell for a time under Ottoman rule.
The castle's ultimate fate was sealed during the anti-Habsburg uprisings at the close of the seventeenth century, when imperial troops deliberately demolished it to prevent rebellious nobles from using it as a stronghold. Today, only scant ruins remain hidden on the slopes of Hradová hill.
