About

Vyšehrad is an ancient hillfort in the Žiar mountains, inhabited since the Stone Age and once a key regional centre of Great Moravia.

The hillfort of Vyšehrad rises to 829.1 metres above sea level on a peak of the same name in the Žiar mountain range, overlooking a strategic pass that once connected the Nitra region with Turiec. Its commanding position attracted settlers from the earliest times, with traces of human activity dating back to the Late Neolithic. Particularly rich evidence was left behind by the Lusatian culture of the Bronze Age (1200–700 BC) and by Iron Age peoples (750 BC – 0 AD), whose numerous artefacts have been recovered at the site.

The hillfort reached the height of its importance during the Great Moravian period, when it functioned as a regional centre. It served as a stronghold from which influence expanded northward from the Nitra region into Turiec, Orava and Liptov. As surrounding settlements gradually took over its defensive and commercial roles, Vyšehrad lost its prominence, a decline that accelerated with the fall of Great Moravia.

The earliest written records mentioning Vyšehrad date from the 13th century, when it was administered by the Diviak noble family. A document from 1277 refers to it as a former castle, suggesting it had already been ruined, likely during the Mongol invasion. In the 15th century the site briefly provided shelter for Hussite Brethren fleeing royal troops; weapons, iron objects, horse harness fittings, a signal horn and coins from the latter half of the 15th century all date from this period. Today the summit area is protected as the Vyšehrad National Nature Reserve.
