You can enjoy a castle trip with your four-legged companion too. Ruins and freely accessible grounds are usually no problem — châteaux with indoor tours are another matter. Here is what to check and where it is worth heading with a dog.
What to check before you go
- Are dogs allowed at all? Dogs can almost always enter freely accessible ruins. They are usually not allowed inside château interiors (carried in a bag or assistance dogs aside).
- Leash. A dog on a leash is expected on castle grounds and along the paths.
- Water and heat. In summer, bring water and seek shade — the climb can be demanding for a dog too.
Where to go: freely accessible grounds
The safest choice is ruins and castles with open grounds:
- Devín Castle — a popular walking spot above the river confluence.
- Strečno — a guard castle above the Váh with beautiful views.
- Beckov — a romantic ruin on a cliff.

Tips for an easy trip
- Avoid peak times — popular castles get busy on weekend afternoons.
- Pack treats and bags — always clean up to keep dogs welcome at castles.
- Check current rules — each listing in our catalogue shows whether it is dog-friendly.
