About
The Roman military fort near the village of Iža, identified with ancient Kelemantia, is a remarkable archaeological site on the Danube riverbank close to Komárno.
Near the village of Iža, roughly seven kilometres east of Komárno, the remains of a Roman military fort lie along the banks of the Danube. This site, known by its Hungarian name Leányvár, meaning Maiden's Castle, ranks among the most significant archaeological sites of its kind in Slovakia.
The fort is identified with the ancient Roman name Kelemantia. It formed part of the Roman limes romanus defensive system, and its position directly on the Danube gave it considerable strategic importance for controlling movement along the river and across the surrounding territory.
