About

The ruins of Hajnáčka Castle stand on a basalt volcanic crag above the village of Hajnáčka in the Cerová Highlands.

The ruins of Hajnáčka Castle crown a striking volcanic hill rising above the village of the same name in the Cerová Highlands. The rocky outcrop is a natural wonder in its own right – it is formed from basalt that solidified from lava millions of years ago, when a now-extinct volcano was still active in this region.

Although only fragments of the castle walls have survived to the present day, the site remains highly impressive. The combination of dramatic geological foundations and medieval stonework makes Hajnáčka a truly unique destination, well worth the climb and the opportunity to explore the history of fortifications in this part of southern Slovakia.
