About
The Komárno fortress is an extensive fortification complex built at the confluence of the Danube and Váh rivers on the site of a medieval castle.
The Komárno fortress is one of the most significant fortification complexes in Slovakia. It lies in the Danubian Lowland at a strategically important point where the Váh River flows into the Danube, a location that has offered natural defensive advantages since ancient times.
The impressive system of fortifications visible today grew from the foundations of an older medieval castle. Over the centuries it was repeatedly expanded and rebuilt, eventually evolving into an extensive network of bastion architecture that met the highest standards of military engineering of its era.
Thanks to its sheer scale and state of preservation, the Komárno fortress complex stands as a unique monument to the military history of Central Europe, continuing to attract the attention of historians and tourists from around the world.
