Kuneradský zámok

Kunerad Castle rises above the picturesque Svitačová Valley in the municipality of Kunerad, at an elevation of roughly 600 metres above sea level. It was commissioned in 1916 by Prussian junker Count Balestrém, originally intended as a prestigious hunting retreat for the emperors of Austria-Hungary and Germany – Franz Joseph I and Wilhelm II. The outbreak of the First World War thwarted those ambitions, and the castle instead became the private residence of the Balestrém family. Together with its surrounding parkland, the entire estate is today listed as a national cultural monument.

The building was designed in the Art Nouveau style with strong French architectural influences. Its distinctive silhouette features corner towers, dormer windows, arcaded terraces, exterior staircases, and an adjacent chapel dedicated to Saint Thérèse of Lisieux. From the very beginning, the castle was equipped with modern amenities and powered by its own hydroelectric plant.

During the Slovak National Uprising, the castle served as the headquarters of the 2nd Partisan Brigade of M. R. Štefánik, which led to its deliberate burning by German forces in September 1944. Restored in 1959, it subsequently operated as a respiratory health sanatorium and later came under the administration of the Slovak State Spa of Rajecké Teplice. Since 1996 it has been in private ownership. Despite two devastating fires in 2010 and 2018, full restoration work was finally completed in 2025.
