About

The medieval castle ruin on Zámčisko hill above Gelnica in the Hnilec Hills is a valuable historical monument offering beautiful views of the surrounding landscape.

On a hill known as Zámčisko, rising above the western edge of the town of Gelnica in the picturesque Hnilec Hills, the remains of a medieval castle have been preserved. Once a sturdy structure guarding the surrounding valley, today only fragments of its walls survive, embraced by the natural landscape.

The castle was an important fortified point in this mining region, and its elevated position offered an excellent view of the surrounding countryside. Over the centuries the structure fell into disrepair, and today it stands as a romantic ruin attracting history enthusiasts and adventurous hikers alike.

A visit to the site offers not only a connection with the past but also fine views over Gelnica and its surroundings. The ruin is accessible on foot and makes an interesting destination for those wishing to explore the medieval heritage of the Spiš and Gemer regions.
