Ostrý Kameň

About

Ostrý Kameň is a medieval castle ruin perched on the highest peak of the Little Carpathians, built in the 13th century to protect the Bohemian Road.

The castle ruin of Ostrý Kameň rises at an elevation of 576 metres above sea level on the steep spur of Záruby, the highest peak of the Little Carpathians. It is situated close to the village of Buková in the Trnava district, and the entire area falls within the Záruby National Nature Reserve.

The castle was constructed in the 13th century to serve as a fortified stronghold guarding the important trade route known as the Bohemian Road. Throughout the Middle Ages it therefore fulfilled a primarily defensive and border-control function. Its eventual decline is linked to the Rákóczi uprising, during which it sustained severe damage and gradually fell into the state of ruins that visitors can admire to this day.
