About

The ruins of a medieval Pauline monastery in Gombasek are a charming historical landmark in the Gemer region, situated between Rožňava and Plešivec.

On a hill above the village of Gombasek, today part of Slavec in the Gemer region, stand the preserved remains of a medieval monastery belonging to the Pauline order. The site lies in picturesque surroundings between the towns of Rožňava and Plešivec, in an area rich in both natural and historical heritage.

The Paulines, a hermit order of Hungarian origin, established their residence here during the Middle Ages, and the monastery served as an important spiritual centre of the region. Over the centuries, as the order ceased to exist and the buildings fell into neglect, the complex gradually deteriorated, leaving behind only ruins that hint at its former glory.

The ruins at Gombasek make for a fascinating destination for lovers of history and romantic architecture. Visitors can enjoy not only the sight of the surviving walls but also beautiful views across the surrounding Gemer landscape, which is home to numerous significant monuments, including the world-renowned Gombasek Cave.
