About
Pohanská hillfort above Plavecké Podhradie is a nationally protected archaeological site featuring a Celtic fortified settlement and evidence of human habitation dating back to the Late Bronze Age.
The hillfort of Pohanská rises on its namesake peak, nearly 495 metres above sea level, overlooking the village of Plavecké Podhradie on the edge of the Little Carpathians in the Malacky district. The entire site is protected as a national nature reserve and holds a remarkably layered history of human settlement spanning from the Late Bronze Age and the Roman period through to Celtic times. Among its most significant features are the remains of a fortified Celtic settlement as well as traces of the Velatice and Podolí cultures, making it one of the most important archaeological localities in the region.
Even today, visitors can observe clear traces of former dwelling pits and the imposing earthen ramparts that once defended the settlement. The hillfort is accessible from Plavecké Podhradie via a blue-marked hiking trail leading towards Plavecký Castle, from which an unmarked path branches off directly to the summit. Running alongside this route is the Plavecký Kras educational trail, which introduces visitors to both the natural and historical highlights of the surrounding landscape.
