About
Rimavská Sobota is home to the scant remains of the northernmost Turkish water fortress, which once stood on the right bank of the Rimava River in the Rimava Basin.
In the town of Rimavská Sobota, on the right bank of the Rimava River, lie the modest remains of a fortified structure of exceptional historical significance. These are the ruins of a water fortress that once held a strategic position in the Rimava Basin, serving a defensive purpose during the turbulent era of Ottoman expansion northward.
This fortress occupies a remarkable place in the history of the region — it was the northernmost Turkish water fortress on Slovak territory. Although very little survives of the original construction, even these faint traces serve as a reminder of the eventful history of central Slovakia and the long presence of the Ottoman Empire in this part of Europe.
