About

Šomoška is a carefully conserved castle ruin perched on a basalt hill in the Cerová Highlands, directly on the border with Hungary.

Šomoška Castle stands atop a distinctive cone-shaped basalt hill within the picturesque Cerová Highlands. Its location is truly remarkable — it sits in the immediate vicinity of the Slovak-Hungarian border, lending it a special frontier character.

Today the castle can be admired as a carefully conserved ruin. Thanks to thoughtful preservation efforts, its stone walls have survived, allowing visitors to imagine the original appearance and importance of this medieval fortress. The basalt rock formation beneath the castle is considered one of the most geologically interesting features of the entire region.

The site attracts not only history enthusiasts but also nature lovers and hikers. From the summit, beautiful views open up across the surrounding landscape on both sides of the border, and it is precisely this combination of natural and historical values that makes Šomoška a popular destination for day-trippers.
