About
The Old Castle in Banská Štiavnica, converted from a fortified church, rises above Trinity Square and stands as one of the most significant landmarks of this UNESCO World Heritage town.
The Old Castle is one of the most striking landmarks of Banská Štiavnica. It stands on the slope of a descending ridge to the northwest of Trinity Square, offering impressive views over the historic town centre. Its elevated position was no coincidence – for centuries it served as a watchtower and defensive stronghold above the town.
What makes this structure particularly fascinating is its origin. The Old Castle did not begin as a conventional fortress; it developed from the conversion of an original fortified church. Over time, the church was adapted and expanded to fulfil the role of a defensive residence, giving the building a unique architectural character that blends sacred and military elements.
Today, the Old Castle is an important cultural and tourist monument that draws visitors interested in the history of mining and medieval architecture. Together with the New Castle, it forms an inseparable part of the distinctive skyline of Banská Štiavnica, a town inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
