Slovakia · Banskobystrický kraj

About

Vartovka Krupina is a medieval watchtower above the town of Krupina, built as a defence against Ottoman raids, overlooking the Krupinica River valley at the border of the Krupina Plain and the Štiavnica Hills.

Vartovka Krupina is a historic watchtower rising above the town of Krupina on a hill known as Stražavár. This remarkable site is situated in the picturesque valley of the Krupinica River, at the boundary between the Krupina Plain and the Štiavnica Hills.

The tower was originally constructed as part of an anti-Ottoman defensive network designed to protect the surrounding region from Turkish raids. Its elevated position gave sentinels a wide field of view, allowing them to spot approaching danger and warn the local population in time.

Today, Vartovka stands as one of the most significant historical monuments in the region, evoking the turbulent era when much of southern Slovakia lived under the constant threat of Ottoman incursions. Beyond its historical value, the site rewards visitors with sweeping views across the landscape where two distinct natural regions meet.
