About
The watchtower bastion in Žibritov is a preserved remnant of an anti-Ottoman fortification situated at the crossroads of the Štiavnické vrchy hills, the Sitnianské foothills and the Krupinská planina plateau.
In the village of Žibritov, at the junction of three distinct natural regions – Skalka, the Sitnianské foothills and the Krupinská planina – stands a remarkable historical structure. The site lies in the southeastern part of the Štiavnické vrchy hills, where several contrasting geomorphological units converge.
The surviving watchtower bastion is a silent reminder of the era of Ottoman incursions, when communities in the region urgently needed protection from Turkish raids. It once formed part of a defensive network of small fortifications designed to serve as warning and resistance points across this strategically significant landscape.
Today, this relic of the past evokes the turbulent centuries during which the southern Slovak borderlands lived under constant threat. For visitors, it offers an appealing destination both for its historical significance and for the scenic beauty of the surrounding Štiavnické vrchy countryside.
