Castles of Slovakia and Czechia in Numbers

Central Europe is a paradise for castle lovers, and Slovakia and Czechia rank among the countries with the highest density of monuments in the world. We dug into our data and summed up the most interesting numbers on castles, châteaux and ruins in both countries.

How many castles are there?

Our database holds over 2,600 castles, châteaux, ruins and manor houses with verified data — roughly 2,380 in Czechia and almost 300 in Slovakia. See the full overview in our castle catalogue.

Châteaux outnumber castles

The largest category is châteaux (zámok) — over 1,300 of them. Next come castles (almost 1,200), ruins (over 120) and manor houses. A castle was mainly a defensive fortress, while a château was a representative noble residence — more in How Medieval Castles Came to Be.

Where castles cluster

In Czechia the Central Bohemian Region leads with over 400 monuments, followed by the Plzeň and South Bohemian regions. In Slovakia the richest is the Banská Bystrica Region, then Košice and Prešov. Browse them on castles by region.

Nearly 800 castles for free

Good news for travellers: over 750 monuments are freely accessible or free to enter — mostly ruins you can reach any time. Find tips under free-entry castles and freely accessible castles.

UNESCO gems

Several monuments are UNESCO World Heritage Sites: in Slovakia Spiš Castle and its surroundings, in Czechia Český Krumlov and the Lednice–Valtice area.

Where our data comes from

Alongside our own verification, location, accessibility and opening hours draw on OpenStreetMap and the monuments' official websites. We update the data continuously.
