About
Spiš Castle is a vast, partially conserved ruin perched on a travertine rock, dominating the eastern part of the Hornád Basin above the town of Spišské Podhradie.
Spiš Castle ranks among the largest castle complexes in Central Europe. It rises on a massive travertine rock crowned with a rugged cliff cap, forming an unmistakable landmark in the eastern part of the Hornád Basin. Administratively, it belongs to the cadastral territory of the village of Žehra, specifically its Hodkovce district, and towers directly above the town of Spišské Podhradie.
Today the castle survives as an extensive ruin that has undergone expert heritage conservation and partial stabilisation work. Thanks to these efforts, the complex remains open to visitors while retaining its imposing silhouette that dominates the surrounding landscape. The ruin is inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List and stands as one of Slovakia's most treasured historical monuments.
