Bratislava is an ideal base for castle trips. Right nearby, especially in the Little Carpathians, you'll find castles and châteaux reachable within an hour by car or train. Here is our pick.
In the city and within reach
- Bratislava Castle — the city landmark with four towers and views of the Danube.
- Devín — a clifftop ruin above the confluence of the Danube and the Morava, minutes from the centre.
Červený Kameň — the finest nearby
Červený Kameň Castle (about 40 minutes) is one of Slovakia's best-preserved fortresses, famous for its vast cellars and falconry shows.
Ruins in the Little Carpathians
Hikers will love this trio of ruins above the vineyards:
- Pajštún — a popular viewpoint above Borinka (about 30 minutes).
- Biely Kameň above the town of Svätý Jur — a short walk from the centre.
- Plavecký Castle — a sprawling ruin above Záhorie (about 45 minutes).
A bit further, still within the hour
- Smolenice Castle — a romantic château at the edge of the Little Carpathians (about 50 minutes).
- Ostrý Kameň and Korlátka — guard ruins above an old trade route.
- Branč — a large ruin near Senica.
Practical tips
