About
The Upper Gate with barbican in Bardejov stands on the site of a medieval castle that once guarded an important customs station.
Standing on the southern edge of Bardejov's historic centre, the Upper Gate with its barbican is an imposing entrance structure with a long and remarkable past. It was erected on the very site once occupied by Bardejov Castle, which served to protect a medieval customs post — an important toll station along the region's trade routes.
This impressive example of fortification architecture remains a remarkable testament to medieval defensive craftsmanship and stands as one of the most distinctive landmarks of Bardejov, a city inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
