Zrúcanina Dlžín

Slovakia · Trenčiansky kraj

About

Dlžín is a site where modest remnants of a small medieval castle's masonry survive on a hill above the village of the same name, at the edge of the Rudnianska Basin and the Strážovské vrchy mountains.

On a hill rising above the village of Dlžín, at the boundary between the Rudnianska Basin and the Strážovské vrchy mountains, lie the inconspicuous remains of a medieval castle. Only modest fragments of stone masonry survive from what was once a solid fortified residence, and today they catch the eye only of the most attentive visitors.

The castle was relatively small in scale, yet its position on the hilltop provided an excellent view of the surrounding landscape. Such elevated locations were typical of medieval fortifications, which used the high ground to monitor nearby roads and settlements. Today the site is overgrown with vegetation, and the ruins blend seamlessly into the natural environment.

Despite its humble state of preservation, the site makes for an interesting destination for enthusiasts of history and medieval architecture. The view from the castle hill across the broad basin and the rugged mountains beyond rewards everyone who makes the journey on foot.
