About
Štítnik Castle is a former lowland water castle in the village of Štítnik, partly preserved as ruins and partly rebuilt into a manor house.
Štítnik Castle stands as a remarkable example of medieval fortification architecture in southern Slovakia. Unlike typical hilltop fortresses, it was built as a lowland water castle, with moats providing protection instead of natural rocky terrain. The castle lies within the village of Štítnik in the Rožňava district, set against the picturesque backdrop of the Štítnik Valley in the Revúca Highlands.
Over the centuries, the castle has undergone considerable changes, resulting in its present-day dual character. Part of the original structure survives as a ruin, with weathered walls bearing witness to its medieval origins, while another section was gradually converted into a manor house serving as a noble residence. This combination of ruin and rebuilt manor makes the site a uniquely compelling destination for history enthusiasts exploring the region.
