Castle Legends and Stories: From the Lady of Čachtice to the Gate of Hell
Published: June 26, 2026

Almost every old castle hides more than stone walls — it hides a story. A legend passed down through generations: of doomed love, a cruel lord, buried treasure, or a ghost that still appears in the courtyard. These tales are what give ruins and châteaux their soul.
At CASTLEO we have added a new Legends & stories section to hundreds of monuments. We picked the most famous ones below — click any castle to read the full tale on its profile.
Love and tragedy
The most powerful legends were always ruled by emotion. At Trenčín Castle you will find the Well of Love — dug, according to legend, by the desperate Omar to buy his beloved Fatima out of captivity.
Beckov carries the tale of a jester named Becko and the curse a desperate servant cast on lord Stibor: "Stibor, within a year and a day you will follow me!" — and the prophecy came true. And Strečno still remembers Žofia Bosniaková, the kind-hearted lady whose body remained miraculously intact after death.

Haunted castles and curses
The darkest legend belongs to Čachtice. It is forever linked to countess Elizabeth Báthory, the "Lady of Čachtice", who according to legend tormented her victims behind these very walls.
Krásna Hôrka has its own curse too — the preserved mummy of Žofia Serédiová rests in its crypt, and many connected her revenge with the devastating fire of 2012. Bojnice Castle is one of the best-known "haunted" châteaux in Slovakia, while at Devín rises the Maiden Tower, from which, legend says, an unhappy girl threw herself.

Treasures, mysteries and sleeping knights
Some legends promise adventure. Inside the hill of Sitno a whole army of sleeping knights is said to rest, ready to wake in the nation's darkest hour. At Muráň the beautiful Mária Séčiová, known as the Venus of Muráň, surrendered the fortress for love.
Humour and mystery are not missing either: at Budatín Castle lord Suňog had his own daughter walled up for loving a poor young man, while Čičva became famous for its legendary "sack of lies" — a register of the tallest tales ever told at the castle.
Legends of Czech castles
Castles beyond the river Morava live by their legends too. Houska château was supposedly built over a gateway to hell — a bottomless pit sealed by a chapel. At Jindřichův Hradec the White Lady Perchta of Rožmberk appears, and you will find a similar white-lady legend at Český Krumlov. And the town below Štramberk still recalls a Tartar raid — with sweet ear-shaped gingerbread, the "Štramberk ears".
Discover the legends yourself
This is only a handful of the stories tucked inside our castle profiles. You will find the Legends & stories section on every castle that has one — including great classics like Spiš Castle and Karlštejn. Browse the castle catalogue and discover which tale belongs to your favourite monument.
